about

One of the more unique and ambitious tracks on the record is “Church Dirt”, which features Jeremy Benson of the Roadside Graves (also a solo artist in his own right). Jeremy and drummer Colin Ryan intersect at more than one musical avenue; in addition to the Roadside Graves, they also work on a project together called 4A Stables, whose primary artistic focus is on film scoring. Jeremy approached this song not only as a guitarist, but as a songwriter, arranger, and vocalist. “By this point, John had just joined up with us, and the song was still an instrumental” says Colin. “He had an idea for lyrics, so we all ended up singing on it.”—including Benson, whose deep baritone vocal summons comparison to late era Leonard Cohen.

lyrics

Beneath the earth
Are rocks and dirt
Fire and water
Glory and shame.

Above the sky
It’s black and white
We see each other
From a dying light

To the east and west
The land begins
Our paths will cross
(Where) our lives will end.

What I was once
I am no longer.
My spirit is gone
I let it wander.
I am not coming back
I will not live forever.
It’s up to you now,
I’m for you to remember.
